Independent Greeks: We do not accept a name that includes the term ‘Macedonia’

The Greek government junior coalition partner Independent Greeks (ANEL), headed by Defence Minister Panos Kammenos, sticks to the position against including the term Macedonia in the name of our country. The party’s strong position was once again reiterated by the ANEL’s spokeswoman Madalena Papadopoulou in an interview with RealFM radio.

“We cannot accept the name including the term Macedonia or derived words. The state of Skopje will have to accept one complete agreement i.e. the change of the Constitution, change in identity cards, one name for everything. Nevertheless, we the Independent Greek cannot retreat from fundamental issues and our firm positions. For us, the core of irredentism of the neighboring state is in the name,” Papadopoulou said.

In regard to scenario on possible agreement to be voted in the Greek parliament with an enhanced majority of 180 lawmakers, Papadopoulou said that they will not give up their position and will say “no” for the use of the term Macedonia and derived words.
