Western Balkan leaders: EU should open its doors

Western Balkan leaders met today in Tirana for the Brdo-Brijuni summit, an initiative which acts as an important forum for the promotion of dialogue and cooperation between countries of the region in their path towards integration in the EU and Euro-Atlantic structures.

According to Albanian president, Ilir Meta, who was also the host of the meeting, “this summit acknowledged the progress that the region is making, in particular with the signing of the Prespa Agreement and the fact that North Macedonia has been given the green light for NATO accession.”

Meta also added that “the summit underlined the need for dialogue and for the implementation of all agreements that the sides have countries have achieved so far.”

Western Balkan countries must solve pending issues through dialogue

Meanwhile, Polish president, Andrzej Duda declared in a press conference after the Brdo-Brijuni summit that “European Union must keep its doors open for the countries of Southeast Europe.”

“Western Balkans is part of Europe and it occupies a special place in its history and its future”, Duda said.

According to him, Europe needs Southeast Europe like Southeast Europe needs Europe.

“The EU must keep its doors open for the accession of new countries in order to find programs, instruments and solutions that support this and help the countries of this region to live better and in peace”, he added.

On the other hand, the Polish president said that “Western Balkan countries must solve pending issues through dialogue”.
