Single election district will attract more voters

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev expressed hope Thursday that consensus would be reached on a change of the electoral model from six to a single election district, saying big parties would eventually lose MP seats but the chance for authoritarian rule would be eliminated.

“We promised to the citizens a single election district back in 2016. This is part of our election programme and we believe in it,” PM Zaev told reporters.

He urged for consensus over the issue in Parliament, adding that SDSM would vote in favor of the changes in any case.

“The State Election Commission is prepared, institutions are prepared, the procedure is simple,” said Zaev.

The PM noted that parties should make this step forward, and while hoping that changes will go through for the April polls, “there will be pressure to do this at the following elections if we fail now”.
