Both Ivanov and Zaev agree over need to elect central bank governor

The National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia should not be left without a governor, because this would have a negative impact on the country’s economy, agreed President Gjorge Ivanov and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev at Monday’s meeting in Skopje.

Ivanov elaborated the arguments over the nomination of incumbent NBRM governor Dimitar Bogov, the President’s Office said in a press release.

Prior to the nomination, Ivanov held consultations with the chambers of commerce, banking association, Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts and other relevant factors in the field, reaching a conclusion that Bogov is the best solution for a governor, taking into consideration the success in NBRM’s work and his experience in the field.

The meeting came after the parliamentary majority said it would not support the proposal of President Ivanov to nominate Bogov for a second term.

“This is a serious institution and I believe we will come to a solution by way of cohabitation and dialogue. The President has the right to nominate but the parliamentary majority is electing the governor,” PM Zaev told reporters on Saturday.

Dimitar Bogov has been the NBRM governor since 2011, while his term expires on May 21.
