I have never, in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, misused the duties I’m still performing. I publicly encourage the judicial bodies to fully investigate all the circumstances involving the ‘Racket’ case, Katica Janeva, the outgoing head of the Special Public Prosecution  told a news conference Tuesday.

She said she knew one of the suspects in the investigation, Bojan Jovanovski, confirming that her son had been employed by the TV station owned by him. However, Janeva said, despite this fact, no one has the right to take advantage of my post in order to gain privileges or be involved in illegal acts.

“I expect a transparent procedure will be conducted that will put an end to all information spread to harm my honor and reputation,” she stated.

Janeva told the news conference she had been hearing rumors that her name had been taken advantage of by many people, including Bojan Jovanovski, without her knowledge.

“I was aware that after taking the helm of the Special Public Prosecution, I would be the target of all kinds of attacks and political bickering. However, I don’t want to leave the wrong impression. I accepted the job amid very difficult circumstances, fully aware I would be the target of attacks to discredit my personal reputation,” she said.

It’s a great honor and a great responsibility, Janeva noted, to be able to serve the state and to lead a team of exceptional professionals that investigate high-level corruption.

The special public prosecutor apologized for being out of the public eye for so long. “It wasn’t easy to watch all the public lynching. I’ve decided I won’t leave an impression that I’m exerting pressure or interfering in the investigation,” she said.

Janeva mentioned said she had already tendered her resignation, which will come into effect once the political parties find a compromise on the new law regulating the SPO’s status.

“I filed my resignation because I don’t want to be someone else’s alibi for the country’s European integration process. But, I confirm I will not, in any way, interfere in the final outcome of the ‘Racket’ case,” Janeva stressed.

The Special Public Prosecution, she noted, is bigger and more important than my post, it has been and I believe it will remain a symbol of merciless fight against high-level corruption and crime.

Janeva said she was leaving behind dozen closed investigations. “These cases will give the answer why some have been trying with everything they had to obstruct by re-election and to discredit the SPO’s credibility with an unseen media witch hunt,” the outgoing special prosecutor said in her statement.
