Zaev expects the NBRM governor to be picked by May 20

Both President Gjorge Ivanov and I agreed that Macedonia should get a governor of its central bank within the legally defined deadline, Zoran Zaev said Monday.

“We have shared certain ideas and we both came to a conclusion that Macedonia should pick a governor of the National Bank of Macedonia (NBRM) within the defined deadline. A ‘governorless’ central bank is bad for the image of Macedonia,” the Prime Minister told reporters.

Macedonia, he said, for decades has had a stable monetary policy, and a stable implementation of all economic policies, including the fiscal one.

Earlier in the day, PM Zaev met with President Ivanov to discuss the appointment of a new NBRM governor after the term of the outgoing head of the central bank, Dimitar Bogov, expires by the end of the month.

“I hope there will be more meetings like today’s either between our advisers or between us in order to find a solution and to select a governor by May 20,” he stated.

Today’s meeting with the President took place upon a request of PM Zaev. The two state officials agreed that ‘the NBRM should not be left without a governor, because this would have a negative impact on the country’s economy,’ read a press release of Ivanov’s office.
