SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE working groups start talks on SPO future status
The ruling coalition and the opposition share opposing views, especially regarding the future of the Chief Special Public Prosecutor Katica Janeva.
Opposition leader Mickoski has reiterated several times that Janeva is ‘unacceptable’ for VMRO-DPMNE, calling for her resignation. On the other hand, Zaev has said that the special prosecutor and her team have his ‘full support.’
The working group of the ruling coalition will be headed by Justice Minister Renata Deskoska and her deputy Oliver Ristovski, whereas that of the opposition will be helmed by lawyer Toni Menkinovski, it has been announced.
In addition to the Law on the Public Prosecutor’s Office, several other reform laws are expected to be tabled, including the laws on the agencies in charge of national security and coordination of the intelligence community in the country. These two bills will be debated today in Parliament at a session of the Defense and Security Committee.
The ruling majority expects the Law on the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the bills to be adopted by late March, ahead of the campaign for the April presidential elections. According to the government, it is one of the conditions for the opening of EU negotiations in the beginning of June.
