International community reacts on the latest arrests

The international community has reacted today on the latest arrests about the violent events taken place on 27 April in the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia.

The US ambassador to Skopje, Jess Baily said today following a meeting with Assembly Speaker, Talat Xhaferi that the current developments are being followed and that justice must do its job.

“The people who are responsible for the violence seen in the Parliament of Macedonia on 27 April must be brought to justice, but presumption of innocence must be respected. Police, prosecution, judicial system must act in a transparent way in full compliance with the highest standards”, ambassador Baily said.

The European Union too has reacted about the arrests, which also included 6 opposition MPs and former minister of Interior, Mitko Cavkov.

“The EU doesn’t want to comment ongoing investigations. We are closely following these events and we expect political parties to be responsible. The EU has stressed the importance of shedding light on the events taken place on 27 April in Parliament”, said the European Commission spokesperson, Maja Kocijancic.

Meanwhile, the British embassy said that the investigation of the April 27 events should follow all the necessary institutional procedures and that this investigation should be transparent.
