European Commission: Hungary owes an explanation on the asylum decision

The European Commission shares the same view as that of EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn that the decision on granting asylum to the Macedonian former prime minister deserves additional explanation from the Hungarian authorities.

There’s no running away from rule of law, according to European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas.

The decision on granting asylum to Nikola Gruevski was reached by a judge, he said noting that ‘there is nothing the European Commission can do’ but ‘it doesn’t mean that no additional explanation is needed.’

This kind of decisions, Schinas said, requires additional explanation.

The European Commission confirmed it received a letter sent by MEP Benedek Javor seeking an answer from the EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos about the legality of Hungary’s asylum decision.

According to Javor, this decision breaches the EU’s 2011 directive. The EC doesn’t want to prejudge what Avramopoulos’ answer could be, according to Schinas.
