Dimitrov: Parliament to decide whether to follow people’s will


The Parliament should decide whether to follow the people’s will, Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov a debate on Monday.

“The referendum turnout was close to 37 percent, and although the Electoral Code stipulates a higher turnout, there were 609,000 citizens who said ‘Yes’. This is the majority and they want Macedonia to move forward. Discussions in Parliament are to come. We are faced with a historic decision. Our reality is that we cannot circumvent the name dispute on the road to NATO and EU. It is up to the Parliament to decide whether to follow the people’s will. This is the key. We need to use this key if we want to move forward,” FM Dimitrov told debate Bilateral in the Balkans: Regional Implications of Bilateral Disputes” within Civil Society Forum Skopje 2018.

According to him, the only time more people said ‘Yes’ at a vote in Macedonia was back in 1994, when Kiro Gligorov was elected President.

Dimitrov noted that early elections were the last resort, if all others failed.
