Construction of panoramic wheel is halted, says Skopje Mayor Silegov

– Works for the construction of a ferris wheel on top of a bridge on the Vardar River in downtown Skopje have been halted, Mayor Petre Silegov said Monday.

“The City of Skopje has determined it doesn’t need it, luckily it hasn’t been paid for. At least we will save some taxpayers’ money,” Skopje Mayor Silegov told reporters.

Asked about other facilities being built on the Vardar River, he said the city administration was working on some of the procedures and was cooperating with other relevant bodies. “For us, Skopje’s safety is top priority,” Silegov stressed.

He elaborated that the contract with the company hired to construct the panoramic wheel had been cancelled.

The Mayor said the legal procedure to remove three imitation galleons from the Vardar river was under way.

Asked whether monuments erected in the Macedonian capital as part of the Skopje 2014 project would be dislocated, Silegov said teams comprised of officials of several relevant institutions were preparing a protocol for ‘such prospects.’
