Thimonier: End impunity of political elites

France is still undecided on the start of North Macedonia’s EU accession negotiations and finds the rule of law very important. The general approach to the Union’s enlargement with the Western Balkans will be the deciding factor, said French Ambassador Christian Thimonier.

The ambassador said the “Racket” case should be viewed realistically, putting an end to the impunity of political elites on both sides of the spectrum.

“Of course, the date for accession negotiations will take into consideration the individual merit of every country, but there is a global vision on the future of the European Union. The regional dimension is very important in the decision-making. Merits and individual progress of every country are to be assessed separately, but the general approach to EU’s enlargement with the Western Balkans will be the most important aspect,” said Ambassador Thimonier when asked if North Macedonia would be discussed in a package with Albania when deciding about a date for accession talks.
