Sassoli: Do not give up on a European future

European Parliament President David Sassoli, who is paying an official visit to the country, sent a message via Twitter, especially to young people, not to give up on the European future.

“Today I’m travelling to North Macedonia and I have one request, especially to the young people of the country:Do not give up on a European future. You belong to our family. The European Parliament stands with you,” tweeted Sassoli.

“I will visit the beautiful country of North Macedonia and I will visit Albania in a few weeks, and these trips are really important to me personally. These will be the first official trips outside the European Union, to countries we are friends with, countries we want to become part of our Union. We know that people in North Macedonia and Albania have been deeply disappointed when they heard that some EU member-states blocked the start of accession talks. I understand and I share your disappointment. You have fulfilled all criteria, you have done an excellent job and would have deserved the green light for the start of the negotiations. On this matter, the European Parliament and EU Commission expressed their opinion very clearly, together with the vast majority of the EU countries. But this is not the end of the discussion. The European Parliament – the house of European democracy – stands with you. We will not remain silent. we will push hard for a positive vote at the next Council meeting. I have one request, especially to the young people in North Macedonia: Please do not lose hope, please do not give up on a European future. You belong to our family and you will eventually be a member of this family. Because this family will welcome you with faith and hope,” says Sassoli.
