24th anniversary from the assassination attempt on former President Gligorov


Today marks the 24th anniversary from the assassination attempt on former President of the Republic of Macedonia Kiro Gligorov.

The president  survived the assassination with serious head injuries. His driver Aleksandar Spirovski was killed in the attack, while Gligorov’s bodyguard Ilco Teovski was injured.

The organisers of the assassination are still unknown. The investigation against an unknown perpetrator is still open. The investigation confirmed that the assassination was well organised and it was only a fortunate circumstance that Kiro Gligorov survived the assassination.

On October 3, 1995, around 9:50 a.m., Gligorov was the target of a car bomb assassination attempt in Skopje. While en route from his residence to his office, the vehicle carrying Gligorov was blown up by an explosion from a parked vehicle, killing his driver and injuring several passers-by. Gligorov was seriously injured above his right eye and was immediately conveyed to the hospital.

Former President Kiro Gligorov died at the age of 94 on January 1, 2012.
