Karadzic sentenced to life in prison for genocide

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic was sentenced to life in prison by the UN war crimes tribunal appeals chamber on Wednesday.

The former political leader of Bosnian Serbs was handed 40 years in 2016 for genocide at Srebrenica in 1995 and other crimes against humanity during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

Both Karadzic and the prosecution appealed the verdict. The court upheld the ruling from the first instance, but agreed with the prosecution that the sentence was too mild considering the gravity of the crimes for which he was sentenced.

After the war, Karadzic fled, avoiding a trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). He was arrested in Belgrade in 2008. He had established a fake identity as an alternative medicine doctor named Dragan Dabic.
