Lt General Evgeny Buzhinsky said diplomatic tensions risk becoming ‘worse than the cold war’ – and claimed the West is trying to overthrow Vladimir Putin’s government.

A retired Russian general has warned that the fallout from the Salisbury attack could trigger “the last war in the history of mankind”.

Lt General Evgeny Buzhinsky said diplomatic tensions risk becoming “worse than the cold war” – and claimed the West is trying to overthrow Vladimir Putin’s government.

Over 100 Russian diplomats have been expelled from countries across the world after Britain accused Russia of using a military-grade nerve agent on ex-spy Sergei Skripal as he strolled with his daughter in Salisbury.

Speaking on the BBC’s Today programme, he warned the situation could escalate out of control if Russia is cornered.

He said: “It is a cold war. It’s worse than the cold war because if the situation will develop in the way it is now, I’m afraid it will end up in a very, very bad outcome.

“Worse than a cold war is a real war. It will be the last war in the history of the mankind.”
