Zbogar: Law on languages will improve relations and bring country back on reform agenda

-“The adoption of the law on languages will improve relations between the communities and bring the country back to the reform agenda,” EU Ambassador Samuel Zbogar said Monday underlining that the EU is optimistic in regard to the implementation of the law.

Zbogar answering journalist question related to the language law, which was passed last week in the parliament, said that multi-ethnic relations in multi-ethnic society should be constantly nurtured thus improving the climate of coexistence in a society.

“I understand that the law on languages is important for the Albanians and they see it as the last step, which emerges from the Ohrid Framework Agreement. The passing of this law to the Albanians is important, because they feel more appreciated and accepted in the society and in the country,” Zbogar said.

Zbogar said when the rights of one, non-majority community are improving this should not disturb or interfere with the rights of the majority community.

“I think that the majority community should not feel in any way that its rights are jeopardized. I feel that there is such fear in the majority community. As the EU, we closely followed the adoption of the law on languages and we expect it to be forwarded to the Venice Commission, as it was stated in Plan 3-6-9. We hope that this law will begin with the implementation and full respect of the European standards and European positive practices. Surely, we expect that the implementation will be respected by all stakeholders in the society and in close dialogue,” Zbogar said.
