Volker: Name settlement would bring greater stability to Western Balkans

Settlement of the name issue would bring greater stability to the Western Balkans, says Kurt Volker, former U.S. ambassador to NATO and current US envoy for the conflict in the Ukraine.

“Of course I hope to see progress on the name issue. It will be in the interest of both countries. I believe that there is hope and we will see developments on the issue,” Volker told reporters in Brussels.

He says the Balkans is still a very unstable and hostile region and all open issues need to be resolved.

Volker believes that Russia is not resigned to Macedonia joining NATO and is likely to seize opportunities to try stop that from going ahead.
