SPO head Katica Janeva resigns

The head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Katica Janeva announced her resignation on Monday, saying it would be activated once political parties reach agreement over the Law on the Public Prosecutor’s Office and elect her successor.

“When all political parties in Parliament elected me Special Prosecutor, I promised to myself and the citizens of North Macedonia to do the job in the interest of the rule of law, fight against crime and corruption in the country. I took the post in exceptionally difficult circumstances, fully aware of the task as hand,” says Janeva in a press release published on the website of the Special Prosecutor’s Office .

She says it was an honor to serve the country and head a professional team of prosecutors, investigators and staff committed to their tasks.

“I have been following the media reports on the negotiations by political parties on the future of the SPO for months. Today, I would like to inform the public that I will not allow my name to be used as someone’s alibi, holding the destiny of SPO and my country’s European integration hostage,” says Janeva.

The prosecutor says the resignation would be activated once political parties come to an agreement over the law and elect her successor.

“Let me thank the entire SPO team who wrote history. We should be proud because we represent a symbol of uncompromising fight against the highest forms of organized crime and corruption. Let me also thank the people and media for the support they gave to our work. I was and will continue to stand ready to fight for a better tomorrow of North Macedonia,” Janeva said in a statement.
