Second vote in Parliament on the name agreement on Thursday

The second vote on the law on ratification of the agreement with Greece is scheduled for Thursday, At today’s coordination in parliament, it was agreed that the new session be scheduled on July 5, when at least 61 MPs should declare the ratification for the president to be obliged to sign.

The Parliament of Macedonia ratified the name dispute settlement on June 20 with 69 votes in favor in the absence of the opposition, which announced that it would not attend the second ballot on this regulation. The same day, Speaker Talat Xhaferi signed the Law on ratification of the agreement and sent it to Ivanov’s office, which, meanwhile, last week, as announced, returned the bill within the stipulated deadline without signing the Decree.

According to Ivanov, the agreement with Greece is unconstitutional and contrary to UN resolutions.

Now MPs are on the move again. The expectations are that even after the second vote, Ivanov will not sign the decree on the law on ratification of the name agreement and will apply the so-called ‘pocket veto’, as it did with the Law on the Use of Languages. President Xhaferi announced that if Ivanov does not change his mind, he will send the bill after the re-run in the “Official Gazette” with one signature. Xhaferi announced that he will act also with the Law on the Use of Languages, whose decree Ivanov did not sign even after the second voting.
