Procedure for depriving Gruevski of his MP mandate starts

Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi will notify the committee on mandate and immunity-related issues that MP Nikola Gruevski has had unexcused absences from Parliament session for more than six months, it was revealed.

Under Article 59 of the Parliament’s Rules of Procedures, the committee is tasked with submitting a motion to Parliament on revoking a lawmaker’s mandate.

Afterwards, Parliament will hold a session to debate the motion. MPs could either decide to revoke a lawmaker’s mandate or conclude that there are no ground for such an action.

MP and former prime minister Nikola Gruevski was sentenced to two years in prison in a corruption-related case. He is also suspected of organizing the Parliament’s storming in April 2017. Last year, Gruevski fled to Hungary where he was granted political asylum.
