MPs: The referendum is the greatest and most powerful form of direct democracy

The referendum is the greatest and most powerful form of direct democracy. Therefore, people should go out on September 30 and have their say on the direction that Macedonia should take, said MPs Ivana Tufegdzik, Bojan Petreski and Xhevad Ademi of coalition FOR European Macedonia on Saturday, within the observance of International Day of Democracy-September 15.

“We have a historic chance on September 30 and everyone should dedicate 30 minutes of their time and make Macedonia the 30. member of NATO,” said DUI’s Ademi.

He said citizens, regardless of their national, partisan or religious background, have a chance to become part of history.

“Macedonia has never been closer to achieving the ideals of past generations. We have the historic chance to be part of the ideal’s realization,” added Ademi.

MP Tufegdzik said the referendum is the greatest and most powerful form of direct democracy.

“The decision taken at a referendum is final. This time, the decision is the direction that Macedonia should take – towards a prosperous future or isolation,” said Tufegdzik.

She added that the referendum decision would affect present and future generations.

“We are taking the decision for those who do not have the right to vote today, but they are the ones who will value our choice. Therefore, we should choose a future where young people will be equal with their EU peers. We have no right to squander this chance and no one will choose the path but ourselves,” stressed Tufegdzik.

MP Petreski said the youth is facing a historic challenge, because Macedonia is at a crossroad.

“I see the referendum as a dilemma of securing a future for our generation in the company of the biggest European and global democracies, or to stay alone and isolated,” said Petreski.

He urged young people to come out and vote, avoiding the mistake that young people in Great Britain made in 2016, when they failed to come out in masses and others decided for them.
