MP Sela seeks €500,000 in damages for pain and emotional distress

MP Zijadin Sela on Thursday didn’t attend a trial against ten men charged with attempted murder in relation to Sela’s attack during the violent storming of Parliament on 27 April 2017.

Sela is also the leader of the party Alliance for the Albanians.

Even though Sela was expected to attend the trial after the testimony of two witnesses, he was a no-show, but his lawyer said he would come to court for the next hearing.

A judge scheduled the next hearings on February 19 and 20 in which Sela is expected to testify as a claimant.

Sela’s lawyer demanded his client be awarded MKD 30 million (EUR 500,000) in compensatory damages.

The money to be awarded as damages should compensate for hospital bills and physical pain and emotional distress, his lawyer told the court.

Today’s hearings included the testimonies of two witnesses of the prosecution.

Ten men are charged with attempted murder of the Macedonian lawmaker.

The court has already handed down verdicts in two cases in connection to the violent events in Parliament last year. In the first case, nine people were sentenced to probation for being involved in the incidents and in the second case, the assailant of Defense Minister Radmila Sekerinska received a four-year prison sentence.

An investigation into a case opened by the public prosecution involving ‘terrorist threat to the constitutional order’ is under way that involves 36 suspects.
