Mitsotakis: Ilinden Macedonia is embodiment of irredentism

Ilinden and the Ilinden Uprising identify with Macedonian irredentism, says New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Mitsotakis said during a visit to the island of Corfu that his party would never accept the name Republic of Ilinden Macedonia.

“We have been briefed that name ‘Ilinden Macedonia’ is on the table. Let’s put some things straight for those who do not know our history. The Ilinden Uprising and the name Ilinden identify with the Macedonian irredentism. It is a name identified by a nationalist uprising, with the formation of a great Macedonia and Thessalonioki as its capital being the main slogan. In other words, the name is an embodiment of irredentism,” said Mitsotakis.

He reiterated the opposition party’s positions over a name for all use and a constitutional revision s prerequisite for any solution.

“I really hope that PM Tsipras has already rejected this name as unacceptable, because it insults the history of our country and should not be accepted under any circumstances,” added Mitsotakis.
