Mazedonische Zustände in the 21st century

Enigmatically tangled things that cannot be untangled – is the interpretation of the borrowed title of this column, expressed in the early 20th century in Germany and throughout Europe about the Macedonian conditions. Macedonians for the past hundred years have not done enough to make this assessment fade away and change for the better in the European public. Whenever a success is achieved that improves and clarifies the image of Macedonia among ordinary Europeans, there will be a great crime that will shock not only Europe but much wider and warn European and world statesmen, governments, institutions and, most of all, the citizens of those countries to be more cautious in bringing this piece of the Balkans closer to the European family.
And so, it will be more than a century as Europe’s population fears the Balkans more than Asian and African refugees and immigrants. Fear in the Western Balkans is holding their politicians’ hands, even at times when the processes of Euro-Atlantic integration are far ahead across the region. If then the term “Mazedonische Zustände” signified backwardness, Balkanism and primitivism, synonymous with the most conspiratorial secret revolutionary organizations that carried out assassinations and assassinations of their first educated people in the West, today at the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century again trying to defuse it seems impossible and futile.
In Macedonia the biggest criminals, who have spent years, with the help of politicians from the top of the government, becoming rich and powerful as kings, while robbing citizens, their property and the country, now are easily bribing their pursuers, public prosecutors and judges. In front of film cameras, the entire justice system is being dismantled from the basic courts to the Supreme Court. The big robbers caught the pickpockets who shoved their hands in their pockets like mice trying to get a piece of cheese. The reverse is the world order typical of the war on crime and corruption. It seems that prosecutors and judges will be the first to be prosecuted and convicted, then big criminals and, if the order is up, the politicians who built and legalized the robbery to a perfect crime when there is no evidence, or their deeds are outdated.
Who knows why, but this evil could be for better. When police officers, prosecutors and judges sit on the defendant’s bench next to prime ministers, ministers, businessmen and other powerful people, there is still hope that we can be saved from the clutches of organized crime and corruption. Of course, if in Macedonia between the grandiose memorials of crime and corruption it is not only those who are suspected to have gained “unlawful benefit”, as much as the tiles on a wall in the toilet in the “White Palace” of the President of the party who has spent two years screaming at the top of his lungs “Stop the thief”, after they stole billions of euros worth of property and put unborn children in debt ,and after none of the main organizers of the decade-long robbery were imprisoned and not a single spoon was taken away from them.
That is why the chaos produced by VMRO-DPMNE demanding the head of Zoran Zaev looks like a parody of the recapture of the state, which they declare as liberation. While Hristijan Mickoski and VMRO DPMNE do not clearly and loudly distance themselves from the criminals at their party’s top, their screaming and lynching atmosphere is easily recognizable pressure to erase and annihilate all criminals Nikola Gruevski and his to adjourn further trials on cases already dealt with by the Special Prosecutor’s Office. While VMRO-DPMNE and Mickoski do not publicly announce that the justice system should work without the selection of your and our criminals and prosecute all those who have committed wrongdoing, until they stop electing public prosecutors and judges on party grounds and until sabotages the adoption of the new law on public prosecution to establish the rule of law equally, it is difficult to expect a decision to start negotiations with the EU.
In fact, in Macedonia there is a simultaneous planting of landmines and clearing of the minefields. Either the state will blow up, if criminals are quicker, or the country will finally be cleansed and freed from the clutches of crime and corruption on a regular and bearable level, because this can never be completely destroyed. This special war takes place in the most significant and most delicate historical period, when Macedonia is the closest to Europe, just about to join NATO, and months before launching negotiations with the EU on equal membership, thus speeding up the conquest of European values.
The disappointment is overwhelming because of the bigger and smaller criminals and the lack of sufficient personal and institutional capacity for the state to deal with crime and criminals. The icon in which we invested all our hopes for establishing the rule of law with the support of the world broke into tiny pieces. While the government has repeatedly called for non-selective justice for all those who have violated the law, the opposition is demanding the dismissal of the public prosecutor, the appointment of a party public prosecutor, the dismissal of organized crime prosecutor Vilma Ruskoska, the dismissal of prosecutors of the special prosecutor’s office representing the crime of VMRO-DPMNE officials, a new law on public prosecution prepared by VMRO-DPMNE, the resignation of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and the government, early elections as soon as possible, and the return of democracy and the innocent that are convicted and persecuted sufferers of the Zoran Zaev regime.
Let’s not make comparisons that clearly and correctly show the differences between VMRO DPMNE’s 11 years and SDSM’s two and a half years of government and accept the thesis that those who have violated the law have lost their power, and that this does not justify the mistakes of the current power. Can they explain how sinners who have robbed the state and citizens for a decade will now save us from the criminals of the new government? No reasonable person could believe this. In order to take a fair stand and choose the side of justice, it is quite enough to see who is the one who has not uttered a single word or called for equal justice for all those accused of breaking the law, and not distancing himself from his already convicted high officials. On the contrary, the thesis of the political persecution of innocents continues to be put forward. If there is no confidence in the entire legal system, then why not seek international monitoring, or some form of impartial international supervision of all trials. So far, some cases have been under the watchful eye of foreign legal experts, but no one has asked for their findings and evaluations at trials.
For me personally, the most obvious difference is that in the time of Gruevism, both citizens and public figures, as well as journalists and judges, were afraid of the government. Today, the government is the one that is afraid of the citizens and the journalists and the public and prosecutors and judges, which is good news that many say there will be justice, albeit rather late.
