Macedonian Parliament waiting on Government’s motion for constitution revision

It is still unclear when the Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Issues will schedule a session over the motion for amendments to the Constitution, which is set to be discussed by the Government later on Monday.

The committee session could be scheduled on Tuesday morning at the earliest, according to sources from the Office of Speaker Talat Xhaferi, who is also the committee chairman.

The Committee on Constitutional Issues has ten days to debate the motion.

Despite the Government’s session on the constitutional changes, MPs of the ruling and opposition parties say there is still no two-third majority in place for their adoption, aimed at avoiding snap elections.

If a majority is not reached, the plenary session on the Parliament’s dissolution could take place on October 15. However, if the early elections are to be held on November 25, as Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said a week ago, the Parliament will have to dissolve on October 10 at the latest.
