Macedonia, Bulgaria to seek funding together for infrastructural projects

Macedonia and Bulgaria will join forces to provide funds for infrastructural projects along Corridor 8 deemed important for the region’s development, Macedonian Minister of Transport and Communications Goran Sugareski and his Bulgarian counterpart Ivaylo Moskovski announced after their meeting Thursday in Sofia.

While discussing railway projects, Sugareski said Macedonia was actively working on the construction of railroad tracks towards Bulgaria.

“Works on the three railway sections leading to Bulgaria are under way as planned to meet the deadlines defined in the memorandum of cooperation signed last year by the governments of the two countries,” the Ministry of Transport and Communications said in a statement.

Sugareski informed Minister Moskovski about plans in connection to Corridor 8 road infrastructure with an accent on the construction of highway sections and the expressway from Rankovce to Kriva Palanka, including a road expansion towards the Deve Bair border crossing.

“Such bilateral meetings are important because it makes it easier to agree on next steps as part of our agendas on transport connectivity. Today’s meeting was fruitful, we also discussed other issues with respect to road transport and I expect the communication to continue further in a bid to work together for the benefit of our countries and our citizens,” stated Sugareski.

The Macedonian Minister asked Bulgaria, being the current holder of EU’s presidency, for an additional support to secure finances through EU funds to help the implementation of projects of great significance for the Republic of Macedonia, stated the press release.

The interlocutors also discussed the support provided by Bulgaria to Macedonia and its Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations.
