Kammenos: Countries should sign deals to ensure regional security

Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos has proposed that countries in the region should sign security agreements to solve regional problems and ensure regional stability.

Following his recent meeting with U. S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis in Washington, Kammenos told the press that the United States, by putting trust in the Greek army, government and people, “has assigned Greece the role of a central axis of stability” towards Cyprus, Israel, the Middle East, as well as Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Macedonia.

“The next step of this policy,” Kammenos said, “will be to sign joint defense agreements at the international level, which will help to resolve problems.”

Asked about Macedonia in particular, the Greek Defense Minister again mentioned the signing of deals between countries.

“My position is clear,” he said. “I think the next stage would be to come up with international agreements that would solve any instability problems.”

According to MIA’s Athens correspondent, Greek media have construed this statement as Kammenos’s Plan B to achieve the geopolitical goals laid out in the Prespa Deal without touching upon the name issue, and these agreements would reportedly be signed between Greece, Bulgaria, Albania, and Macedonia, with the option of Serbia being included at a later point.
