Gruevski announces his MP resignation via Facebook

North Macedonia’s former Prime Minister, now fugitive, Nikola Gruevski announced today that he would resign from his MP post after the Parliament initiated a procedure to strip him of the parliamentary seat due to his six-month absence.

Back in November 2018, Gruevski escaped to Hungary and received asylum there, after he was sentenced to two years in prison in Special Prosecutor’s Office case dubbed “Tank”.

Gruevski says in a Facebook post he will formally inform the Parliament over the resignation in the coming days, thanking the VMRO-DPMNE MPs for their perseverance.

The ex-PM accused the ruling SDSM for persecution and false propaganda against him and opposition party VMRO-DPMNE.

Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi has said that a plenary session is to take place after June 10, discussing the motion by the Committee on Rules of Procedures and Mandatory-Immunity Issues to strip Gruevski of his MP seat. The decision needs endorsement by a two-thirds majority.
