Grubi: It’s absurd to mull changing the electoral model 5 months before the elections

DUI MP Artan Grubi said Wednesday the political parties have aligned changes to the Electoral Code that doesn’t foresee changes to the electoral model.

On Tuesday, a round table was organized in Parliament by 15 MPs initiating changes to the electoral model to include a single electoral district, instead of six. Yesterday’s round table was a meeting of enthusiasts, Grubi said.

“We stick to the formal format in charge of discussing changes to the electoral model at the Ministry of Justice.”

“This week, a meeting was held of the political parties, NGOs and international organizations, where a text was agreed on a draft-law that contains all OSCE/ODIHR recommendations from the previous election cycles, including the presidential, local elections and the name referendum,” said the MP of the junior government coalition partner.

According to Grubi, it’s absurd to mull changing the electoral model ahead of the 2020 early elections.

VMRO-DPMNE also believes that the electoral model shouldn’t be amended only a few months ahead of next year’s snap elections.

The secretary general of the largest opposition party said VMRO-DPMNE backed the concept of a majority model with 120 electoral districts.

No VMRO-DPMNE official took part in yesterday’s round table on changes to the electoral model, to be turned into a single electoral district. The initiative is supported by the ruling party SDSM.

According to Janushev, negotiations of the working groups on recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR and the EU involving electoral legislation are in an advanced stage. “We expect the recommendations to be adopted soon before election is called,” he told a news conference.
