Decision on renaming Skopje airport, highway enters into force

19 signposts bearing the outgoing name of the highway ‘Alexander the Great’ will be replaced with another signs with its new name ‘Friendship Highway’ under a government decision on renaming the highway along Corridor 10 and the airport in Skopje that has come into force after being published in the Official Gazette.

“The Public Enterprise for State Roads has received the decision on renaming the Alexander the Great Highway and is taking measures to implement it. 19 road signs will be replaced,” the institution’s director, Zoran Kitanov, told MIA.

TAV Macedonia – the concessioner of the Macedonian airports – hasn’t revealed yet any information about the renaming of the airport, which is going to be called Skopje International Airport. Recently, the company has stated that it is following all current developments and will act according to instructions of the government. TAV Macedonia is yet to comment on its future actions regarding the decision of the government.

The decision on renaming the highway and the airport, passed last week by the government, was published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday.

The move to change the names of the highway and the airport is seen as a sign of good will allowing thaw in the countries’ relations after PM Zoran Zaev’s meeting in Davos with his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras.

The highway was named ‘Alexander the Great’ in July 2008 in line with a decision of the former administration.

It was also a decision of the former government to name the Skopje airport ‘Alexander the Great’ in December 2006.
