Bogov: NBRM must not be left without governor

The National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia (NBRM) must not be left without a governor, it can negatively affect the national economy, Dimitar Bogov, its outgoing governor, said Thursday.

He said he expected a new governor to be appointed in line with the law on the NBRM as soon as possible.

“NBRM plays many important roles in the economy, it maintains price stability, it makes sure the banking sector is safe. To leave the central bank without a chief would make some serious negative implications. We are still hoping that an agreement will be made in compliance with the NBRM law,” Bogov told reporters on Thursday.

Bogov recently was nominated by President Gjorge Ivanov to be re-elected as governor to serve his second seven-year mandate.

State interests should be considered first and foremost when deciding who is going to be the next governor of the Macedonian central bank, according to him.

“The interest of the politicians should be the interest of the country. If there’s good will, the best candidate can be picked through dialogue,” Bogov noted.
