Ahmeti: Macedonia’s survival in jeopardy if outside NATO

Do we want peace, goodneighborly relations, stability? The September 30 referendum is a stamp of peace and stability and closes a chapter that has been open for 25 years. This is a referendum for NATO, says DUI leader Ali Ahmeti.

In an interview with Tirana-based TV station Klan, he says ethnic Albanians live in their own country and the referendum has special significance for their future.

“Albanians will, without a doubt, vote ‘for’ the accession in NATO and EU, for a safer and better future,” adds Ahmeti.

According to him, great agreements are always done through compromise, with the assistance from international friends.

“We need to consider the history and the identity of the others when living in one country. I am not in favor of revanchism. Now is the time for NATO accession and start of EU accession talks,” stresses Ahmeti.

The DUI leader notes that the survival of the identity of fellow citizens Macedonians and Macedonia itself will be in jeopardy outside of NATO and EU.

Ahmeti is convinced that ethnic Albanians will vote ‘for’ at the referendum.

“Macedonians are also tired of obstacles to the country’s integration, so the atmosphere is generally positive,” he says and adds that problems are created by some irresponsible politicians not common citizens.
